Installing a septic system in eastern Idaho is a permitted, inspected process that starts with a hole in the ground rather than a price. What the soil profile shows determines the system type, and the system type determines nearly everything about the cost and the timeline.
The first step is a site evaluation through Eastern Idaho Public Health. You submit an application with a scaled plot plan showing the property, structures and measurements, along with floor plans, and an environmental health inspector comes out to evaluate the site. A test hole dug to ten feet is required so the inspector can read the full soil profile: texture, depth to any restrictive layer, depth to basalt, and evidence of a seasonal high water table. That reading is what makes a design legal or illegal on a particular lot, which is why no honest quote comes before it.
On favorable ground the answer is a conventional gravity system. Volcanic loess and sandy loam over adequate depth around parts of Idaho Falls and the Jefferson County benchland accept effluent well, and a standard tank with gravity-fed trenches is the least expensive option. Where the soil is thinner, percolates too fast, or the water table comes up seasonally, the design moves to pressure distribution, where a pump doses measured amounts across the whole field at once so no single area is overloaded. Where there is very little usable soil, a mound or an engineered sand-filled bed puts imported material where nature did not supply it. Advanced treatment units come into play on the most constrained lots.
Shallow basalt is the dominant local variable. On many Snake River Plain properties, rock is only two to four feet down. Where an installer hits lava, the practical approach is to break through and excavate down to competent soil, often to ten or twelve feet, then backfill with several feet of sand to build a treatment bed the effluent can percolate through. That is a serious excavation, and it is the single biggest reason two neighboring lots can get quotes thousands of dollars apart. It is also why the test hole is not a formality worth skipping.
There is a real reason the standards are strict here rather than merely bureaucratic. The Eastern Snake River Plain aquifer supplies drinking water across this whole region, and water moves through fractured basalt quickly with little natural filtration. Nitrate loading in the aquifer is an ongoing regional concern, and onsite systems are one of the contributing sources. The soil depth requirement is what does the treatment work between a drainfield and the groundwater below it.
Budget in ranges rather than a number until the hole is dug. A straightforward gravity system on good soil is the low end. A pressure distribution system with a pump chamber, controls and an alarm panel is meaningfully higher. A site requiring deep over-excavation and imported sand, or a mound, is higher still, and can approach or exceed the top of the $5,000 to $20,000 range commonly quoted for major septic work. Tank size scales with the number of bedrooms rather than the number of people currently living there, so a design gets sized to the house.
Installation is inspected before it is covered, and Eastern Idaho Public Health requires advance notice to schedule that visit, so build a few days of slack into any construction sequence that depends on backfill. Once the system is in, the whole point is to keep it out of the drainfield repair and replacement conversation for as long as possible, which comes down to regular septic tank pumping, keeping vehicles and structures off the field, and having pumps and floats checked yearly on systems that have them.
Keep the permit, the as-built drawing and the final inspection paperwork somewhere you can find them. They locate the tank for every future service visit, they answer a buyer's first question during a sale, and they are what an inspector reaches for when something needs diagnosing years from now.

So the inspector can see the whole soil profile rather than just the surface: soil texture and depth, where basalt starts, and whether there is evidence of a seasonal high water table.
